Galle is located in the southern coast 116 km from Colombo and only 5 km from Unawatuna Beach. Galle was founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century. In 1598, the Dutch came to Galle and destroyed all traces of the Portuguese presence, and built their own port on an area of 36 hectares - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is interesting for the combination of Western architecture and South Asian traditions.
